I would imagine buried in all the small print of the original contracts the words PS2 were used and that the record labels are suggesting that the songs ONLY play on PS2 via the original singstar title and that they have not agreed to it being in any new Singstar title on a PS3 that would require a brand new licence and new royalty fee even for the backwards compatibility.
I believe the licence to use back catalogue songs was for the PS2 on the original Singstar game and i wouldnt be suprised if the artists/record companies took great annoyance to them now being used on a totally new game (even via backwards compatibility) and not getting some sort of royalty for it. I believe it all comes down to the platform and title it is playing on that the record labels take exception to.
What I supect here is some dodgy advertising ('whole back catalogue available'.yep perhaps they meant, but didn't say to download) with a sprinkly of customer rip of (yeah we could let you use the songs from you old disks but why should we when we can get you to pay for them again.cue potential download licensing issue instead :mad:
I have four Singstar disks, Sony has paid for the use of those tracks in a game system, I have paid Sony to use the game / listen and sing to the Songs. Sorry, don't see how license issues prevent Sony from releasing the latest title in the series with the same functionality of using disks / songs from the previous titles. Hope that explains the games delay and why songs appear to be slow in coming forth. Now its released and the premium content is a very low profit margin they are not interested in caving into record company demands and instead will keep negotiating until they are happy with what they want!Īs for back catalogues, the licence agreements were only for the older titles, and not for this new title, so the record labels are well within their right to refuse the songs use until they receive a bigger royalty payment (something Sony doesnt want to do).
Sony want to pay peanuts and artists want their worth!Īs they were desperate to hit the Xmas market with a top must have game the belief is that Sony dropped some of their protests and paid higher than they were wanting to finally get the licence agreements and ship the game to get xmas sales. They finally managed to get a fair few games on it after finally agreeing licencing but have been very slow on releasing any further titles simply because of the same reason as before. The game was built, they werent allowed to use many songs in it! Licencing issues, the reason the game was delayed for a long time was because of licence issues over a lot of the songs.
